If you have a patio that you would like to turn into a room, there are a few things you will need to do to transform it. The first step is to enclose the patio. This can be done by installing walls or by using curtains or other dividers.
How to Enclose A Patio Into A Room [Step-by-Step]
Step 1: Destruction Of The Porch And Re-Leveling Of The Ground
Surprised, there was some insulation behind the boards. It didn’t make any difference in terms of airflow, heat retention, or loss, so it was not worth it.
The majority of it had been put in the wrong way. The right insulation for your home is a very important decision. It’s not possible to cover everything here.
Besides, you only have the walls open enough once during your project.
Because you want to know as much as possible about how to turn a porch into a living space, you want to get as much information as you can.
In addition, I think that’s where you should spend your money and time to get the best results.
If you’re still not sure if you should turn your porch into a room, know that your house will thank you for it.
Step 2: Demolition Of The Supporting Wall
Most of the demolition was done by us, except for the structural wall, which we hired someone else to do. We asked for help from experts in this project.
As far as we could tell, we could take down the drywall and insulation, as well as loose nails and ceiling tiles. Our contractors couldn’t do this without taking down the walls’ studs and beams.
To keep going in this process, let’s move on to the next step.
Step 3: Find The Right Beam Size
Indeed, we had to hire an engineer to figure out how big a beam was needed to hold the weight of the whole house.
He took a lot of measurements and found that we needed a beam that was ten feet long, sixteen inches tall, and almost eight inches deep. It was huge.
Step 4: Lining Up The Floors To Convert The Porch To A Room
The floors were on two different levels, which made it hard to connect the porch to the rest of the house.
When the porch was built, it fell about 3 inches. It didn’t line up well with the foundation of the house made of concrete.
Before they leveled the 12 inches of concrete that led up to the porch, the contracting team shimmed the porch floor and added a second layer of plywood.
They then filled in the gap between the old porch and the foundation of the house with new concrete.
If you’re wondering how to close a porch, this is a very important step.
Step 5: Make Changes To The Electrical System.
It has always bothered me that the porch (or garden room, as we called it) didn’t have any plugs.
However, you can’t think about how to close a porch to make a room without taking the plugs into account first.
In the past, I had to open the door to plug-in tools or lights, and it was always cold and dirty.
This is why I wanted to add as many plugs as possible when the walls were opened up.
Three double outlets were added between the laundry room and the patio door: two on the long wall and one near the patio door. A quad outlet for my computer equipment was added next to the quad outlet for the computer.
When you start a renovation, it’s important to figure out where your outlets are. If your furniture isn’t in the right place, you might not be able to put it where you want.
Step 6: Lighting Up The Old Porch
In the patio room, the previous owner took a lot of time to add two almost floor-to-ceiling windows. This let in a lot of light from the south. However, when the porch was closed in, all of that light was wasted on a wall in a storage room that was not very interesting.
Before, two walls held everything together. Now that they have been removed, the windows let in a lot of natural light.
Apart from that, I chose eight LED recessed pot lights to put on the ceiling. Each room had one in the corner (so four in the porch area and four in the old storage room of the house).
I added task lighting to them, and now this room is the most bright in the house! So, if you want to turn your sun porch into a bedroom or your porch into a living space, this is very important.
